## The Relationship Between Matter & Empty Space in an Atom ⚛️

0.00000001% of what you thought was real, the matter around you, is actually 99.99999998% empty. As in like space; for every second of matter in an atom, there are 32,000,000 years of empty space.

**Let’s get an idea:**

The diameter of a nucleus: 10 × 10^{-13}

The diameter of an atom: 10 × 10^{-8}

The ratio of the nucleus to the empty space in the atom is calculated first by calculating

10 × 10^{-13} ÷ 10 × 10^{-8} which will give you the number for a line cutting through the atom.

To a 2D idea of the space we need to square the 100,000 and to get a 3D volume-metric type figure you cube the 100,000 so 100,000^{3} is 1 × 10^{15} which looks something like 1,000,000,000,000,000.

**Another way to look at it:**

1 second to 1,000,000,000,000,000 seconds

1 second to 1.666666667 × 10^{13} minutes

1 second to 2.777777778 × 10^{11} hours

1 second to 1.157407407 × 10^{10} days

1 second to 31,709,792 years

For every second of matter there is 31,709,792 years of empty space inside of each and every atom 🤯

**Even anotherer way to look at it:**

Finding the percentage of empty space to matter. First find the volume for both the Nucleus (V_{n}) and the Atom (V_{a})

V_{n} = 3÷4 × π × (5×10^{-13})^{2} = 1.047197551 x 10^{-24 }cm^{3}

V_{a} = 3÷4 × π × (5×10^{-8})^{2} = 1.047197551 x 10^{-14 }cm^{3}

To get a percentage value for this we divide V_{n} by V_{a} and then multiply by 100 which gives a value of

1 x 10^{-8}.

That looks something like only 0.00000001% of matter in any given atom.
